Supporting Justin’s Success
At Life’s WORC we are proud to offer a wide variety of services to support people with developmental disabilities and autism, and to help ensure that they live their most meaningful life.
A perfect example of how these programs and services combine for success is Justin.
As a participant of the East Rockaway Day Habilitaiton program since 2011 and the Customized Employment program since 2016, Justin has grown both personally and professionally. “Justin, has improved as a person overall,” shared one of his supervisors. “Over the four years that I have worked with Justin, I have been able to observe how his flexibility, commitment to his goals and ability to work with his peers at day hab has improved and helped him to become ready for the workforce.”
The staff in the Customized Employment program couldn’t agree more. “During the past two years that Justin has been a participant of the Employment Training Program at Life’s WORC, Justin has earned employment twice, demonstrating that as we grow and learn more about our capabilities in life, where we start with employment is usually not the only place where we will have employment,” noted Ericka Charles, Coordinator of the program.
From fall of 2016 through the summer of 2017, Justin held his first job at the Gersh Academy as an intern completing Front Door Monitor/Greeter duties. After almost a year of obtaining valuable paid work experience, Justin, with the support of his family and service providers, identified that he was now ready to apply his enhanced skills and sociable personality to a new position.
After reflecting on his work experiences at the Gersh Academy in combination with the outcomes of the evaluation portion of his ETP program (Discovery), Justin identified that a position where he is able to be social, work as a team, share information and complete maintenance tasks would be the most suitable for him, based on his current skills and interests. With such outcomes in mind, Customized Employment Specialists Samara McCarthy and Matthew Russo together identified and pursued an Usher/Maintenance position at the JJ Bellmore Playhouse for Justin. Shanda Johnson, the Supervisor of the Garden City Day Habilitation program, assisted with recommending the Playhouse as a great match for Justin.
Justin hasbeen working at the JJ Bellmore Playhouse Theater since early March 2018, and although he is a new employee, he has been recognized by his colleagues for bringing positive changes to the work environment through his dedicated character, knowledge and team-player mindset. Justin is thrilled by his success, and shares that he could not be any happier about his new position and the impact he is having on his new workplace.
The Customized Employment team and everyone at Life’s WORC congratulates Justin on his continued growth and success! Thank you to the East Rockaway Day Habilitation team and Medicaid Service Coordinator Fances Miller for contributing to Justin’s growth by well applying our agency values.
